The HCSR04 sensor has given much service in detecting objects or obstructions that cross it's path. The principle of operation is fairly simple. A high frequency sound is projected from one microphone and the other listens for the response. Based on how long it takes, this duration can be used to determine the distance to the obstruction.
What the H-Matix Ultrasonic provides is an interface board for using the sensor.
The module has a few simple connections for it to do it's job.
- If your requirements are simple and you need an indication that something passed in front of the sensor, then the default setup is ideal. The unit will respond to a obstruction from 10CM away. This makes it useful for a motion or obstruction sensor in a closed area.
- If your needs are more bespoke, then the PIC12F1822 is an 8 BIT MCU which can be reprogrammed to your requirements.
